Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of downtown Denver at 1610 16th St Mall, Illegal Pete’s Lodo offers a refreshing twist on fast-casual Mexican dining that stands out in a crowded market. Specializing in hearty burritos and flavorful bowls, this spot is perfect for those craving a quick yet satisfying meal without compromising on quality or flavor. Whether you're a local or a visitor exploring the lively streets of Denver, Illegal Pete’s promises a genuinely satisfying experience.

The menu here is built around crave-worthy burritos packed with fresh, carefully seasoned ingredients. One of the highlights is the Smothered Carnitas Burrito, praised by patrons like Joshua McCauley for its generous portions and deeply comforting, savory flavors. If you prefer a lighter option, the recently added OGCB bowl provides a refreshing, customizable alternative, layering smoky meats, zesty salsas, and vibrant veggies into a satisfying meal. Families will appreciate the thoughtful Kids Menu with offerings such as the Kid's Baja Fish Burrito and the playful Silly Sticks—handrolled taquitos that bring a fun, shareable element to the table.

Complement your meal with a variety of beverages ranging from the nostalgic fizz of Mexican Coke and Jarritos Grapefruit to healthier choices like the Whole30-approved Hoplark CitraHop Water. Their creative selection caters to all tastes, helping to round out the meal perfectly.

The dining atmosphere at Illegal Pete’s Lodo balances the bustling energy of downtown with a clean, spacious, and inviting environment. Seating is plentiful, providing comfort whether you choose to dine solo or with a group. It’s the kind of spot where you can watch the city buzz by, relax, and enjoy your meal at your own pace. While the setup is self-service—which can sometimes mean line waits during peak hours—the friendly, efficient staff and functional space work together to keep the experience smooth.

Customer experiences showcase a mix of opinions but underline the notable strengths of the restaurant. Patrons appreciate the flavorful, filling nature of the food and the sense of community within the space. There are mentions of strong competition in Denver’s Mexican food scene, suggesting Illegal Pete’s is best appreciated by those who enjoy a no-fuss, well-rounded burrito experience with an edge of local pride. Additionally, the presence of social inclusivity—such as visible support for the LGBTQ+ community—adds warmth to the venue’s welcoming atmosphere.

In summary, Illegal Pete’s Lodo is a compelling choice for anyone craving fast, fresh Mexican fare in Denver’s bustling core. The bold flavors, thoughtful kids’ options, and lively yet comfortable ambiance come together to craft an authentic and reliable local favorite that’s easy to return to time and again.

A great fast casual store: easy to get you burrito etc how you like it, and seating is plentiful while also clean. An upgrade over chipotle, glad to see there's other competitors in this space. Smothered carnitas burrito was what I got. It's filling and has as much flavor as you'd expect for the price point.

I went there with a group upon the group’s recommendation. They offer a limited mexican menu, mostly consisting of fast-food-style dishes. After waiting in line for about 10 minutes, I ordered the OGCB as a bowl, which they had recently added to their menu. My choice was tasty, and everyone in the group was satisfied with their meals. it is a self-service restaurant, collecting used trays and cleaning tables in the dining area is either not done or done very infrequently , we did not see it during our stay. Overall, it is a true value-for-money restaurant.

With less than 1.5 days in downtown Denver, I wanted to be selective about where to eat. That strategy doesn’t always work, but this time it went reasonably well at Illegal Pete's. I stopped in with about two hours to spare before my train. Even though I arrived just before noon, it took a little over 20 minutes in line to reach the register. I ventured away from the usual steak or chicken and ordered the fish burrito, loading it up with just about everything—black beans, brown rice, tomato, lettuce, and more. How can you say no to any of that? It seems they cook the fish to order (possibly fried), which added roughly another 15 minutes before my burrito was ready. Lesson learned: if you’re coming to Illegal Pete's for lunch on a tight schedule, plan for a longer wait or you might be late to your next appointment. I liked the burrito. The fish was there, though it was hard to gauge how much since I had to eat quickly to catch my train out of the city and there was so much other ingredients. Overall, it was good—nothing extraordinary—but I’d still choose this place over Chipotle or other chains. Friendly staff (not sure about the bar staff), local vibe, very crowded and clearly popular. No regrets. Finally, the burritos are huge and could easily carry you through the day if, like me, you tend to eat just one meal a day.

In researching where to eat in Denver, this restaurant came up multiple times so I put it on the list of MUST VISIT places. When I arrived, I was very underwhelmed. Idk if it was just hyped up too much or what, but it felt like a regular chipotle, freebirds, etc. Nothing special about the place that I could tell. I got a burrito bowl and chips, which was good, but really messed my stomach up. I took home leftovers and ended up throwing them away because my stomach was so destroyed after my visit. The staff were great, the restaurant had indoor and outdoor seating, which was great, but it just seemed like an average place. Nothing great about it, nothing bad. Just a spot for lunch. 3.5 stars overall.

Not from Denver and took a chance on this place. In my honest opinion - this place was alright. I expected more from it! I think there is better Mexican food options around. Overall, I think the food was a little disappointing for the price. The service & queso were good. This place would’ve been 3 stars for me food wise, but since they had rainbow flags I’m raising it to 4!!!

Great place for quick protein fix. Even at the end of the shift, the food was fresh and the server mixed it well. A little pricy. $12 for steak and salad naked burrito. Still good for a quick drop by if you are near the railroad!

The bowl was pretty good, and I liked the burrito a lot. The green chili was good, and the queso was solid. I can't wait to go back and try a margarita.

The Baja fried fish quesadillas were perfect! It’s not on the menu, but they were kind enough to make it for me.
